The house was designed for and built by the well known contractor and one time Mayor of Pretoria, John Johnston KIRKNESS.

Built on hillside, facing north, and has vast panoramic view over the whole of Pretoria including the Union Buildings, which are on the opposite hill.

Walling, Kirkness hard wire-cut bricks of brownish red colours. Selected Oregon and teak joinery.

Reinforced concrete floors upstairs covered with Oregon flooring. Other floors generally tile paved and Oregon flooring laid in narrow widths, oiled and polished.

Roof covered with Kirkness special “pan” tiles.
