J.G. (Morné van Rooyen, May 2026) Translation The NG congregation Coligny is composed of the outlying communities of the three municipalities of Lichtenburg, Ventersdorp and Hartebeestfontein. The congregation Welgemoed (the initial name) was founded 112 years ago, also on a Wednesday, in the corn warehouse of the NW Co-op. Agricultural Company Ltd. The name was changed to Coligny in 1923 when the town was established, after the Huguenot hero adm. Gaspard de Coligny. The spelling and pronunciation of the new name caused trouble in the beginning, see the incorrect spelling on the cornerstone of the old church. Until the church building was completed, the services were held in the above warehouse. The foundation stone of the old church - later used as a church hall - was laid on 29 July 1916. Three months after the foundation stone was laid by Fr. J. G. Perold, the church was consecrated. It seated 400 members and cost £960 unfurnished. The vicarage, whose architect was Van Eck and contractor Leemhuis, was completed in 1918 at a cost of £2,300. The foundation stone of the new church building was laid on 11 June 1931 by Rev. M. J. du Preez and was inaugurated on 14 February 1932. The architect was Gerard Moerdyk and building contractor L. Lauryssen. The church, which seats 750 members, together with the organ and pews, cost £12,000. With the symbolic Ox Wagon Trek in 1938, the stone piling took place in memory of the passage of the Voortrekker wagons on the church grounds and the stones were reworked into the ornate monument that adorns the main entrance to the church building.
