This high rise beach front Hotel and Apartment block was commissioned in 1964, and completed and opened in December 1965. The basic sketch plan had been completed by SHAPIRO, FAWKES AND CLARKE and the concept was further developed and documented by OSMOND LANGE. The lower three floors were hotel and above that, apartments. The Contract value was R5 000 000.00. This was the largest building on the East London Esplanade at that time. The hotel interiors were designed and furnished by Doug Roberts - who later lectured at the Architectural Department at the University of Cape Town. Revised: April 2020. This replaced the Beach Hotel - Second. A large, finely crafted architect’s perspective of the Kennaway Hotel is mounted in the ground floor lift foyer servicing the apartments. Titled ‘NEW BEACH HOTEL’ the perspective also records the architect’s details of ‘B. W. SHAPIRO AND OSMOND LANGE & PARTNERS’ and the name of the artist ‘M. W. VAN DER WEIDE.’
