Award citation
Vrygenhoek Organic Spa follows the architectural idiom of what has become a contemporary rural vernacular of shedded spaces in barn-like pavilions. The use of materials is restricted, the stone sourced locally, to create a quiet architecture that blends, or will as natural vegetation returns, with its setting. While not all the service devices are operational the design accommodates future energy and water saving facilities. There is a strong spacial play in the main pavilion and the spaces engage the views, although perhaps to the detriment of climatic efficiency. The project is recipient of the MIA Award for Architecture.
