Was erected as a Library in 1891 at a cost of £300 (R600) with the proviso that one room be set aside as a municipal office for the town clerk.

The building was refurbished as a museum and inaugurated on 6 August 1971 and declared a provincial museum by the administrator of the then Cape Province in 1972.
