Workers' Quarters
Barkly East, Eastern Cape

Date:1923
Type:Row Houses

In 1905 the Colonial Government had granted to the Council 16 morgen of land on which the Bantus had settled, on condition that houses and sanitary conveniences were erected for them. In 1922 the Administrator approved a loan of £5 000 for the erection of 24 four-roomed houses for Bantu and Coloureds, and the Council accepted a tender for the erection of these houses and three wash-houses for £4 454 19s. 6d. As a result of the rapid increase in the number of Bantus the housing shortage continued and in 1925 a further 100 one-roomed cottages were built at a cost of £4 475.
