Officers' Houses
Tshwane (Pretoria), Gauteng

DEPARTEMENT PUBLIEKE WERKEN - ZUID-AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK: Architect
Klaas (jnr) VAN RIJSSE: Design Architect
John Johnston KIRKNESS: Contractor

Date:1890s
Type:Officers' Quarters
Status:Extant
Street:1-15 Artillery Street

These small buildings have all the attributes of Republican architecture. Although each of the houses is similar in concept, the corner house, allotted to Colonel Stefaans Trichardt, is the most spectacular, with turrets and gables and a corrugated-iron roof pierced with airvents and spiked with finials. A stoep shelters the cool rooms within, and broad steps lead down to the diminutive front garden.

(Picton-Seymour, 1989: 169)
