In earlier times referred to as the Valkenberg Lunatic Asylum. The original hospital building was proclaimed a National Monument in 1991 and is now a Provincial Heritage Site.

Sydney MITCHELL, architect to the Scottish Board of Lunacy in Edinburgh, was appointed by this body to design the Valkenberg Asylum in Cape Town for the Valkenberg Association in about 1892, supervised by HS GREAVES.

JS CLELAND may have made alterations at a later date but this is unconfirmed.
