Title:Early architects of Cape Town and their buildings (1820 - 1926) with postcard illustrations, The
Place:St James
Publisher:Michael Walker

The great era of the publication of postcards illustrating buildings in Cape Town occurred between 1904 and 1914. Postage was inexpensive, cameras were rare and it was an ideal way of showing distant friends, churches, schools, town halls, hotels, stations, institutions and commercial buildings. These postcards of over a century ago are now scarce. This book is a permanent reminder of the early architects of Cape Town and their art nouveau designs prior to the era of art deco architecture which flourished after the Artes Decoratifs Exhibition in Paris in 1925. Here styles became more streamlined with smooth polished surfaces, especially with regard to high-rise buildings.
