| | Book | | | Author: | Coetzee, Colin | Year: | 1995 | Title: | Forts of the Eastern Cape : Securing a frontier 1799 - 1878 | Place: | Grahamstown | Publisher: | Colin G Coetzee |
This book on fortifications on the Eastern Frontier is meant to be a scholarly, authoritative, well-researched reference work, not anecdotal, on a neglected topic of South African Military history. The research material was mostly drawn from original British archival sources and works of contemporary writers, some of them actual eye-witnesses during the construction of some of the military posts.
Aims were, among others, to indicate the exact nature of the forts, why they were erected where they were sited, how they related to the broader trends of frontier history and how their existence affected the lives of the British soldiers who manned them as well as those of the amaXhosa against and among whom they were erected. | | Link to WorldCat - find this book in a library near you |
