With Abrahamse, Clarke explores the deep sense of history of the 'Golden Republic' the Netherlands had been in the C17 and the opportunities offered by a kin-folk deep in the African continent, namely the ZAR, in search of a strong statement of Republican authority through the programme of civil works, and how this might reflect identity and independence. In turn this leads to an exploration of appropriate types, styles and localities in order to concretize and realise that ideal, a 'New Golden Republic'.
