Lexicon Southern African Acoustics Institute _____________________________________________________ The Southern African Acoustics Institute (SAAI) provides a forum for all aspects of acoustics. Special interest meetings as well as conferences are organised for members and non-members. SAAI also addresses the legislation and standards issues facing South Africa. The Southern African Acoustics Institute held its inaugural meeting on 15 October 1975 in Pretoria where 45 scientists, engineers, and others interested in acoustics met. They all felt the need for a body which would establish cohesion between people engaged in the broad subject of acoustics and which would act in a professional manner with authoritative and consultative functions. [At this time (2025) it is not known if it is still active.] The South African Acoustics Institute held its first Congress in Pretoria in October 1985, on the occasion of the organization's tenth anniversary. The more than 150 acousticians as delegates in attendance included those from South Africa well as a number from overseas representing Australia, Europe, and North America. Here a new board of officers of the SAAI was elected, headed by the newly elected President, E. D. Smith, of the National Physical Research Laboratory, Pretoria. At this congress it was also announced that the South African Bureau of Standards had then recently formed an Acoustics Division and had opened its newly constructed National Acoustics Testing Facilities in Pretoria in October that year.
