International Style

The International Style takes its name from a the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) exhibition curated by Philip Johnson, to refer to the new architectural style of the c20. It found its first foothold in South Africa through the 'Transvaal Group' (le Groupe Transvaal) on the Witwatersrand in the 30's. This style is characterized by unrelieved cubic shapes, large glazed curtain walling, often in horizontal bands, and a predilection for white rendering, so called WHITE BOX ARCHITECTURE. This style reflects mainly in the design of high rise building, affluent corporate architecture, prestigious civic projects and the residents of the avant-garde.
