Rand Pioneer

_____________________________________________________

A Rand Pioneer is considered to be one, who through their activity, enterprise or industry, was a founding father of Johannesburg society from 1886 onwards. Of the early Johannesburg architects have this soubriquet. Inevitably they are generally white male immigrants, many of them 'Randlords'. The status of being a Rand Pioneer was formalised by the formation of the Rand Pioneer Association (Inc) established on 1903 07 08. Their Oath reads:

PIONEERS OF THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA
May we, the sons and grandsons of those
who came from distant land,
be strong as they, now the call has come
to all join hearts and hands.
Their pioneer vision and courage built
this country we hold dear –
Now we, Pioneers of a different age
Must answer loud and clear ...
We stand for what is fair and right,
with peace for all, our quest.

Associated documents are in the repository of the Strange Library of Johannesburg. They are celebrated by the Rand Pioneer Memorial in Pioneer Park, Turfontein, Johannesburg.
