A general term applied, usually with a geographical prefix, to wood that resembles true teak Tectona grandis.

The word is Malayal tekka Tamil tekku. This name was adopted owing to the fact that Europeans first became acquainted with the wood in Malabar, India (Hobson-Jobson).
