Randlord

_____________________________________________________

Randlord is a term used to denote the entrepreneurs who controlled the diamond and gold mining industries in South Africa in its pioneer phase from the 1870s up to World War I. Architects actively sought out their patronage and would curry favour. See, for instance:

House L Phillips: Hohenheim
House Lionel Phillips: Villa Arcadia
House George Farrar, Bedford Court - now St Andrew's School for Girls,
House Mrs Dale Lace: Northwards
