Loveday, a British settler, arrived in Natal on the Hebrides in May 1850 according to Kearney (1973:74); Hillebrand (1975) suggests the date may not be as certain, giving 1848 or 1850. He called himself an architect but may also have acted as a builder and as an inspector-surveyor in Natal and practised in Pietermaritzburg until the late nineteenth century. Several buildings in Pietermaritzburg have been attributed to him, such as the design of the first Catholic church, additions to Government House, St Peter's Cathedral, the Presbyterian Church in Church Street and the Masonic Hall but only two, the first Roman Catholic church in Loop Street and the St Mary's Native Church in Burger Street (now known as Grey's Chapel, corner of Burger and Commercial Road) are documented.
