Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon LOVEDAY, Richard Kelsey Born: 1854 08 04 Died: 1910 Draughtsman / Public Luminary Loveday is known rather as a higher civil servant than in relation to architecture, but in 1889 he was listed under 'draughtsmen' in the Pretoria directory. He was born in Pietermaritzburg and came to Pretoria in 1872, entering the Republican civil service as third clerk to the Registrar of Deeds. He became the successor to H Rider Haggard as Master and Registrar of the High Court, Pretoria, in 1878. He lost his job due to retrocession in Transvaal (1881). It was then that he obtained his job as draughtsman. He was member for Barberton in the Transvaal Volksraad from 1890 to 1900 and became Mayor of Pretoria in about 1900 with a brief to set up municipal government once the British took the capital. Pretoria and Barberton have Loveday Streets.
