Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon MARWICK, Graeme Born: fl. 1935 Architect Graeme or Graham? Whose origins are currently unknown, studied at the School of Architecture, University of the Witwatersrand. He collaborated with DM COWIN on the designs of temporary buildings for the Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg (1936), having won the competition for such work. Among these buildings were the well-known 'Tower of Light' (the great Central Tower) and two large exhibition halls, all of which were designed in what was then called the modernistic style. According to Herbert (1975:146) Marwick was one of a new wave of architectural students at the University of the Witwatersrand who looked to Frank Lloyd Wright rather than exclusively at European architects.
