Trained in architecture at the University of Cape Town from March 1931, graduating in June 1936 and having traveled in 1934 throughout South Africa and also to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). By 1937 he was in private practice in partnership with AJC RETIEF (cf RETIEF & McDONALD). In 1959 and again in 1969 his address was 304, Main Street, Paarl.
He was the son of Roelof Daniel McDonald and Susanna Margaretha McDonald (nee Joubert) and was christened in the DR Church in Ceres. He married Alida Johanna Elizabeth van der Heever (1916-2003) on 9 March 1940 in Cape Town. Their address at the time, as per the marriage register, was 5 Rheede St, Cape Town. He died in 1989 and she in 2003. They were buried in the Parys cemetery, Paarl. (www.familysearch.org)
