Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, son of James (1876-1944) and Julia McCleaod nee McLean (1878-1935). He studied architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1928 to 1932, spending some time in 1928 in R HOWDEN's office in Johannesburg. He spent 1933 in the office of P Rogers COOKE and a term in 1934 at the Architectural Association, London. He remained in Britain for six months in the office of BURNET, TAIT & LORNE in 1935, and toured the continent and England during this period, returning to South Africa in 1935. He began practice in Springs and by 1954 was in partnership with KEF GARDINER (cf KEF GARDINER & McFADYEN); in 1959 their address was 22, Beresford House, Main Street, Johannesburg; the partnership was dissolved in 1960. In 1969 he is recorded as a salaried member of Union Corporation Ltd of Johannesburg, Transvaal.
McFAYDEN married Sophie Catherine Charlee Rocher (1914-1999) on 1943 01 05 in Port Elizabeth (FS).
