| | PENKETH and CALVERTEstablished: 1853 Ended: 1855?Architect |
The partnership between P PENKETH and J CALVERT in Cape Town from about 1853 or 1854, probably for not longer than two years. Sophia GRAY considered them to be 'crooks', and modified their plans for St Mary's Church on the Braak in Stellenbosch. According to Radford (1979:189) St John's Church in Long St, Cape Town (1853-7) in Early English Gothic Revival style, was designed by Calvert and built by Penketh. (Gutsche 1970:138; Picton-Seymour 1977; Radford 1979) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
