'A prominent theatre designer' (Radford 1979:252), he designed about 60 theatres in the nineteenth century. His name is linked to the design of the Theatre Royal in Kimberley (c1870?), it is not clear whether Phipps may have submitted a plan for the theatre, finally designed by RS DAY in 1887. He may have taken part in a possible competition for the theatre or, as seems likely, have been a consultant. According to Radford (1979:252), Phipps was the consultant architect for the Opera House (or Grand Theatre) on the Grand Parade in Cape Town. The theatre, backed by Ohlsson's Brewery, was opened in 1893.
