| | PILKINGTON, George WilliamBorn: 1822 Died: 1908Architect |
Was the son of Captain George PILKINGTON, was born in Trinidad. He came to Cape Town in 1850, about two years after his father's arrival in the city. Pilkington seems to have been employed as a builder and contractor. About 1854 Pilkington & McDonald were listed as Building Contractors and Merchants in Castle St, Cape Town. By January 1857 they were also recorded as Timber Merchants. In the capacity of Builder, Pilkington was responsible for the Castle Causeway on the foreshore, the Customs House and the Standard Bank, Cape Town. He may have been the Pilkington who won second premium in the competition for the Maritzburg Collegiate Institute in 1861, 'with his Pre-Raphaelite drawing' (Martin 1980:315).
