He served his articles with Kelway Pope (no relation) from June 1908 to June 1912 in Southampton, Hampshire in England, and studied at the Southampton School of Art under LC Alford. His architectural coaches for the RIBA Intermediate examination were Sir Banister Fletcher and F Philip. On completion of articles he was employed as an assistant in the office of JP Fogerty in Bournemouth for two years before entering the office of AG Bothams in Salisbury (Harare), Wiltshire, in December 1914. He was in the army during the First World War, was discharged in June 1919, and was engaged in reinforced concrete work with Hill, Richards & Co, Poole, Dorset, before working for an architect London in (not identified). He took the RIBA final examination in 1919 and was elected an Associate of the RIBA in 1922. He came to South Africa about this date and was employed by the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT. The RIBA Kalendar 1923/4) listed him as an Associate working in the Transvaal and by 1926/1927 the Kalendar listed him as working in Port Elizabeth. He would appear to have been on the temporary staff of the Public Works department since his name did not appear in the Public Service Lists of the time. He left South Africa about 1927/8; he did not register as a member of the Institute of South African Architects. ARIBA 1922.
