Trained as an architect by joining the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Pretoria as an architectural draughtsman Grade 2 in 1929. He was involved with the work on the house Over-Vaal, official residence of the Administrator of the Transvaal. In 1934 at age 27, Pretorius married Frances Harriet Weber, aged 25. Their marriage certificate gives his occupation as Architect. Their only child Raenet Pretorius was born in 1937. Pretorius died young (age 40) in the Pretoria General Hospital in 1946. He was the brother of the Pretorian photographer, Dotman Pretorius.
