Spent most of his career in the Public Works Department in the Cape. He was born in Halstead, Essex in England educated at Leyton in Essex. He trained in London and came to South Africa in 1889, arriving in Cape Town. He went to Johannesburg via Kimberley and worked in Johannesburg for GE GRAY for a short time before returning to Cape Town where he entered into partnership with F CHERRY (cf CHERRY & QUY). The partnership was dissolved after a short time (n.d.) and Quy joined the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, Cape Colony in September 1890 as an architectural draughtsman. In 1906 he was appointed assistant architect, PWD and assistant engineer to Cape Town in April 1912. He was transferred to the head office of the PWD in the Eastern Province, in King William's Town in 1917 in the post of second grade district engineer, the name given to the position of the director of the district engineer's department in King William's Town. He was in charge of the department until his retirement in 1919 from the Public Service. Details of his career after 1919 remain obscure at present. MSA.
