Served on the Cape frontier from 1822 to 1823 with the ROYAL ENGINEERS. Thought to have designed the new buildings of 1825 including a new mess room as extentions to the East Barracks in Grahamstown, done in strictly classical style. in 1966 these still survived as part of the Fort England (Later Lunatic Asylum, then Mental Hospital) (Lewcock 1963:444) All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
