| | SEMMELINK, Hendrik/ Herman?Born: 1867 Died: 1952Architect |
Also spelt ZEMMELINK and SIMMELINK.
Born in Holland, Semmelink completed his architectural training with his uncle, MD Semmelink, an architect practising in Nijmegen, Holland. In 1889 he came to the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek and worked in the building profession showing his 'capabilities in this line in several architects' offices'. Uys (1981) cites from a memoir of BOURSSE that, as member of the Heidelberg-Klip River Field Cornetcy, he served with Mattheus MEISCHKE and Hendrik SIMMELINK [sic] amongst others in the South African War. For a number of years he was associated with the building firm of MCA MEISCHKE; he possibly designed Meischke's house in Pretoria (826 Pretorius St, and assisted Meischke with the building of the new Government buildings in Bloemfontein around 1906. He returned unmarried to the Netherlands in 1910. He had a daughter there but died in Amsterdam without heirs as she died in WWII.
