ARIBA 1936
Was born in Pretoria, the son of IE Stegmann. He received schooling at King Edward VII in Johannesburg. He first entered the Arts course at the Transvaal University College, Pretoria in 1926, transferring to study architecture at the University in 1927. In 1928 he left for London to study at the Architectural Association from where he graduated in 1931 and remained in Britain from 1931 to 1936, working first as Art Director at the British & Dominion Film Corporation at Elstree near London from 1931 to 1934. He subsequently worked as an assistant to G Grey Wornum, FRIBA, from 1934 to 1936. As a student at the Architectural Association he was able to travel frequently in Europe and visited Holland, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, the latter three on skiing tours. He also travelled to Morocco in 1933 as Art Director for the British & Dominion Film Corporation. Returning to South Africa in 1936, he began practice in Pretoria and soon opened offices in Vereeniging and Klerksdorp; in about 1938 he entered into partnership with JJO ORPEN and HG PORTER (cf STEGMANN, ORPEN & PORTER). During World War II he served the full term of the war in the SA Engineers Corps as Captain seconded to the ROYAL ENGINEERS. He married Cynthia Johnson in England and they had two children, a son and daughter. By 1959 ORPEN must have left the firm as the name was then STEGMANN & PORTER. There is also a Mrs CJ STEGMANN recorded working in the firm, his wife. He was last recorded in 1967 as of 51 Jupiter Street, Waterkloof Ridge, Pretoria.
