When Stern registered with the Institute of South African Architects in 1939 he had already gained a Diploma in Agricultural Engineering (1921) and had continued his studies in architecture at the University of Cape Town (1935-1939). He worked in Cape Town.
On his death he was noted, not so much as an architect but more so, as a founding member of Lions International, having played an important role in this movement.

He married Doris Thelma Sussman of Kimberley on 13 June 1926 in the Memorial Rd Synagogue, Kimberley. Their marriage certificate gives his occupation as "farmer".
