Was born in Edinburgh and educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh; from 1876 he attended Edinburgh University where he appears to have trained as a mechanical engineer. He subsequently worked for the North British Railway, the Waterford and Central Ireland Railways, the Great Western Railway and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways before coming to South Africa about 1878. He appears to have settled in Uitenhage, Cape, where he was founder of the Volunteer Movement and principal of the Cape Government Railways Technical Schools. He was also (n.d.) engineer and architect for the South African Co-op Dairy Co, Adelaide, Cape. AMICE; MI Mech E.
