BArch 1961 (Pretoria) Samuel Pauw was born in Germiston, son of Prof Samuel Pauw, an academic at the University of Stellenbosch. He receives his school training at the Primary School Pretoria-East and matriculated in 1953 at the Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch. His interest in art was aroused at an early age by his mother, who collected works from artists, such as Maggie Laubser. After matriculating he joined the Military Gymnasium, before electing to study architecture at the University of Pretoria. There, in his years of study, he became acquainted with the work of international masters such as Frank Lloyd WRIGHT and LE CORBUSIER. In 1961 he earned his BArch. In the year after graduating he commenced private practice. By the the age of twenty-eight Pauw had gained recognition when, with Piet MOOLMAN, he was awarded the commission to design a new opera house for Johannesburg. Although the project was never realised, it has established his reputation as a promising designer. From 1966 to 1976 he was director of the multidisciplinary firm Plan Medewerkers (PLAN ARCHITECTS INCORPORATED). During his career, he designed offices, residential, educational, cultural, research and industrial buildings. Pauw had a passion for education and helped establish the Y-Design Architectural School in Mamelodi in 1986. In 1990 he earned a Master's degree with a study on LE CORBUSIER. His contribution to the professions has been recognised by he being awarded several accolades, including several Award of Merits from the Institute of South African Architects and the He was a recipient of the Medal of Honour for Architecture by the SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns in 1995. He died in Pretoria in 1995. During a career spanning more than three decades he had designed diverse range of buildings. He is considered as influential in the development of modern institutional architecture and its contemporary development in South Africa. Samuel PAUW was invited to participate in the 50 year Anniversary of the University of Pretoria School of Architecture Alumni Exhibition held at the Pretoria Art Gallery on 7-25 July 1993. The following is a letter sent to the members of the Pretoria Institute for Architecture. Dear Members of the PIA, It is with great sadness that we would like to inform you of the passing of Samuel Pauw. His memorial service will be held on Tuesday morning at 11h00 at the NG Kerk South-East Pretoria in Stella Street, Waterkloof. Herewith a note from Claus to remember him by. "Samuel Pauw is Dinsdagnag die 18 Mei 2016 oorlede. Samuel was 'n uiters bekwame, vindingryke, waagmoedige, innoverende en entoesiastiese argitek. Die verskeidenheid suksesvolle projekte wat deur die firmas waarin hy 'n vennoot was, spreek vanself. Die vernuwende wyse waarby die funksie en estetika van projekte tot meriete bekroonde argitektuur gelei het is alom bekend en word onder sy kollegas gerespekteer. Samuel het sy kantoor bestuur deur erkenning te gee aan elkeen en 'n atmosfeer geskep wat spanwerk, selfvertroue, kreatiwiteit en inisiatief bevorder het. Elkeen is gerespekteer en kon so sy deel bydra. Sy wye spektrum van kennis en belangstelling in argitektuur, die beeldende kunste, literatuur, geskiedenis, musiek, ens, is met ons gedeel en kon ons daardeur groei. Hy het verskeie oorsese studiereise onderneem, lesings gegee en het ook aktief betrokke geraak by projekte buite die veld van argitektuur. Ek beskryf hom graag as 'n omgeemens, nie net teenoor die mensdom nie maar ook teenoor die skepping. Veral in die laaste jare as sy vennoot en ook daarna het ek sy diepsinnigheid en lewenswysheid beleef. Lekker gesprekke rondom alles en nogwat, vanaf geloofsake, die nuwe Suid Afrika, die toekoms van die argiteksprofessie, mens wees en die "Paradigm Shift" wat nodig is vir die oorlewing binne die vinnige veranderde wêreld, sal ek altyd onthou. Samuel het voorspoed en teëspoed geken. Swaar tye het hy moedig aangepak. Ons is innig dankbaar dat Samuel 'n groot en belangrike deel van ons lewe was.
