| | COLES, Albert PhippsBorn: 1873 Died: ?Architect |
Was born in Australia and educated at South Melbourne College. It is not yet known with whom he trained but by the time he married in 1896 he was practising (in Melbourne?) as an architect. He went to London (n.d.) to study (and work?) for three years and in 1901 was elected a member of the Society of Architects in London. He came to Johannesburg in 1903 where he set up practice on his own account. He was first listed as an architect in Johannesburg in 1905. He appears to have left the country before 1907 as he is not listed in Johannesburg after 1906. Men of the Times, Transvaal (1905) noted that: 'during his short stay in this country Mr Coles has gained much popularity and esteem by his natural courtesy of manner and level sense of right living.' MSA. (Men Tvl 1905:105-6 port; RAU doc)All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon.
