He was born in Haarlem, North Holland, the Netherlands. He emigrated to the then ZAR where he was appointed Supervisor 3rd class in 1895 under WIERDA in the ZAR PWD (MINNAAR, 2000: 45). In 1899 his salary was £300 per annum (Almanak 1899).
He married Margaretha Catherina Kolbe(1874-1943) 0n 1898 02 02 in Wakkerstroom in the then ZAR by whom he had five children, Tsetse Claudia (1900-1968), Gerka Peter (1901-1975), George Augustus (1903-1976), Sybrand (1908-1971) and Frederik Fortunatus (1910-1980 (Family Search).
