McKILLOP worked in the Public Works department in Pretoria from 1922. By 1927 he was resident in Johannesburg, probably still with the Public Works Department; he was working on the new Law Courts, Johannesburg in 1930 and at some point he worked in Pietermaritzburg before returning to the Transvaal in 1933. He was appointed Assistant Architect to the Public Works Department in 1934. He remained with the Public Works Department until he retired. In 1959 he recorded as a retired member of the Transvaal Institute, although still of the address of the Government Buildings, Pretoria, although in 1969, while still recorded as a retired member there, his address is The Towers, Flat 18, 60 College Road, Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg..
