The son of AM DE WITT was born in Cape Town and educated at Bedford Grammar School in England followed by the South African College. He was articled to Clinton & Russel in New York and studied at the Atelier Donn Barber in New York. He then joined his father in practice in Cape Town but abandoned architecture in favour of moulded ceramics of some artistic merit. He apparently eloped and married an Irish woman, upsetting both families, but was later reconciled to both. He married Dorothy Gladys Crosse on 3 May 1918 in the Church of St Mary (see marriage certificate).
He enlisted with the Canadians in WW1 as an artillery officer and did some etchings and is mistakenly referred to as a war artist which officially he was not.
