John Innes was born on 7 June 1912 at 4 Drumdryan Street, Edinburgh, the son of John Innes, police constable, and his wife Annie Underwood.
Innes immigrated to South Africa where he was registered in 1953. He was a member of the Orange Free State Institute as well as the Transvaal Institute of Architects. In 1960 Innes was working in Pretoria for CORRIGALL CRICKMAY & PARTNERS but had become a partner in the mid-1960s with Arthur Leslie Rutland EVEREST and Glynn PRICE-HUGHES as EVEREST INNES & PRICE-HUGHES which became EVEREST & INNES by 1970. He was still practising in this partnership in 1972. He is not listed in the RIBA directory for 1979.
