Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon BEBBINGTON, Clive Henry Born: 1932 09 11 Died: 2023 03 12 Architect BArch 1955 (Witwatersrand) Clive did his schooling at Union High, Graaff Reinet and Boys' High in Kimberley. He studied Architecture at the University of the University of the Witwatersrand, graduating in 1955. As a 4th year student he worked for his present firm in Kimberley. He spent 1956 to 1959 in London with a very large practice TP Bennet & Son. He joined the Pretoria office of JOUBERT OWENS & VAN NIEKERK in 1960 becoming a partner in 1964. The two largest projects in which he was involved over the years were Schubart Park ( '73 to '76 ) and the Armscor Missile Test Range near Arniston ( '83 to '86.) Other projects include office buildings such as Benstra, Delpen, 110 Hamilton Street, Duncan Manor, motor dealerships for Leo Haese BMW, various blocks of flats and cluster and individual housing. More recent years brought a building for the Economic & Commercial Counsellor of the People's Republic of China with partial involvement in the main Embassy, and a greater involvement in individual houses than was the case previously. A building which impressed Clive greatly when he arrived in Pretoria was the newly completed Polley's Arcade building by Norman EATON. The project from which he derived the most satisfaction was the Armscor project mentioned previously. A variety of buildings was involved from housing to offices to recreational to technically complex buildings located in a unique and sensitive environment. The challenge was to create buildings which while satisfying practical requirements would blend with the dominant vernacular character of the region. Much of his daily routine still revolves around architecture although he practises from home on a more limited basis now. He uses his spare time to read both for enjoyment and for enlightment. He is a keen follower of sport in most of its forms and regularly tries his hand at some experimental cooking.
