Was born in Durban, son of William Bain and Christina nee Milligan (FS). He was educated at Durban Technical High School where he matriculated in 1921. He was articled to CHICK & BARTHOLOMEW in Durban from 1922 to 1925, remaining in this office as a draughtsman until 1929. During these years he studied architecture at the Natal Technical College where he completed the course, taking the qualifying examination in Architectural Construction in 1934. He then worked successively for OBEL & GRANT (Durban 1929-1933) as chief draughtsman; SN SERCOMBE (Durban 1933); OBEL & OBEL) Johannesburg 1934-6) and HT Battiscombe (1936-9) who does not appear to have been an architect. By 1939 he was back in Durban where he is still recorded as a salaried member in 1959. In 1969 he is of address 462, Currie Road, Durban Natal but still of the TPIA. He resigned from the ISAA in 1975.
He married Pearl Mabel Manning in Durban, Natal on 1934 05 23 (FS).
