Was born in Scotland. He was articled to Henry Francis Kerr (1855-1946) 1895-1900. He attended Edinburgh School of Applied Art and Heriot Watt College. He was assistant to Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) in 1901, to Messrs Dunn & Findlay (James Bow Dunn (1861-1930) & J Leslie Findlay from 1901-03. In late 1903 he left Scotland and moved to South Africa, where he was assistant to Thomas Arthur SLADDIN of Cape Town from 1903 until 1907. While there, he collaborated with GG HENDERSON on a competition entry for the Law Courts Building at Bloemfontein and they received Second Premium for their effort (South African Association of Architects, Engineers and Surveyors Journal, Dec. 1906, 49). In 1907 he travelled in Belgium. He briefly worked in London for Percy Burnell Tubbs in 1907 before emigrating to Canada. He passed the RIBA qualifying exam 1908. Gordon moved to Canada, and settled in Montreal .
