GRACE, Lionel Upperton

Grace's work in South Africa was a building for a shipping company, probably for the Union Castle Steamship Co, Cape Town, for whom he had worked in London, Sekondi (West Africa) and other places. Grace was apprenticed to Longley & Co in Crawley near London from 1893 to 1895 and articled to Satchell & Edwards, FFRIBA, in 1896. He won the Grissell Gold Medal in 1902 and also the Royal Academy Gold Medal and travelling studentship in 1904/1905. From about 1909 he was associated with the Royal Mail Steamship Co and in 1912 made alterations to the Union Castle Steamship offices in Fenchurch St, London, and alterations to a hotel at Sekondi in West Africa. At some point he entered into partnership with one Farmer (Grace & Farmer) and as such designed the Edificio Britanico, Buenos Aires and was responsible for much of the restoration work after the earthquake at Kingston, Jamaica (n.d.). Grace designed Electra House, Embankment, London. His work in South Africa was a shipping office, Cape Town, mentioned in his obituary in the RIBA Archives (Biograhical Files), and dating from about 1929. While working in South Africa, regulations required him to register with the Institute of South African Architects from which he resigned only in 1938.
