Grant was born in Durban and educated at St Joseph's School and at the Natal Technical College, Durban. He was articled to BUCKLE & MASON for three years from October 1916, attending classes at the Technical College. About 1919 he joined CHICK & BARTHOLOMEW's office in Durban as a draughtsman and sat the intermediate RIBA examination in 1928. In his ARIBA nomination papers (1939) he stated that he had been in practice on his own account for the previous ten years (1928-1938) and did not mention his partnership with LT OBEL (1929-1934) in Durban (cf OBEL & GRANT), after the dissolution of which in 1934 he had practised independently in Durban. Grant resigned from the Institute of South African Architects in 1983.
