Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon LITH, Hank Born: Died: 2023 01 01 Landscape Architect It is with great sadness to announce that Hank Lith suffered a fatal heart attack whilst visiting friends in Johannesburg and passed away on January 1st. Hank was a well known Cape Town personality in the world of Landscape Architecture and played an important role in the redevelopment of many heritage landscapes. Whilst working in the public sector for Cape Town Municipality, he was honoured for his design work in the City and received acknowledgement for facilitating the planting of thousands of street trees in Cape Town. After his retirement, he worked tirelessly as a volunteer fundraiser and active member of the planning team which motivated the Renaissance of Arderne Gardens in the heart of Claremont. Many members of the public will remember his excellent Saturday morning guided tours and the research that he carried out to write up the history of this once neglected public park. Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West is another important heritage landscape that was revitalised under Hank's guiding hand as a board member, and the new Arboretum that he envisaged will hopefully grow in the years to come and be a fitting legacy for a life well lived. Hank lived in the green and leafy suburb of Newlands in Cape Town and it was always a delight to visit his garden with students of Landscape Architecture. Not only was he an ardent gardener but also a collector of fine arts and sculpture, and his private space epitomised the high level of attention to detail and interest in all things aesthetic that Hank stood for throughout his working career.
