| | BANNISTER, William ErnestBorn: 1874 02 26 Died: 1931Architect |
Was born in Alloa, Scotland, came to South Africa in 1896 and joined WH STUCKE's office in Johannesburg the same year. During the Anglo-Boer War Stucke closed his office and both he and Bannister left for Port Elizabeth where they remained for the duration of the war (1899-1902). Bannister became Stucke's partner in 1901 (cf. STUCKE & BANNISTER). The partners returned to Johannesburg in 1902. Bannister married in 1903 and in 1905 was listed working in Cape Town while still in partnership with Stucke. He continued to work in partnership with Stucke until May 1908 when he returned to Britain and did not return to South Africa. Nothing is yet known of his career after he left. He died in Scotland twenty-three years later, in the same year that Stucke died. An obituary for Bannister was printed in The Friend.
There is an entry for Bannister on Scottish Architects.
