HEUKELMAN, Jan

Born: 1871 02 10
Died: 1954

Architect

Year registered: 1927

ISAA (1927).

Heukelman was probably the son of the weaver Herman Heukelman (1843-?) and his wife Hendrika Hendrika Gerhardina Groot Enzerink (c. 1851-?) who, with their children, emigrated from the Netherlands to the ZAR in 1870 (Ploeger, 1989: 93). He was born in Pietermaritzburg in the Natal Colony (Family Search).

He was recorded in the Almanak of 1899 as working for the Departement van Publieke Werken of the ZAR in Pretoria as supervisor (3rd class). After the South African War he joined the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Pretoria in 1908 as a 2nd grade draughtsman and was still working as architect in Pretoria in 1927. Submitted an entry for the Competition for the new Prime Minister's Residence - unplaced.
