| | IBLER, JohnBorn: 1855 Died: 1901 10 22Architect |
Was born in Salzbach, Bavaria, Germany, the son of George Ibler, a labourer, and Catherine Engelhard. His training is currently obscure. He left Germany for Australia (n.d.) where he worked in Victoria where he was architect for the Borman Catholic Church in Bairnsdale in 1881-83. By 1886 he was an architect in Brisbane. He married Elizabeth Mary Geraghty in Queensland on 17 February 1892. From 1889 to 1894 he was in partnership with George Simkin as Simkin and Ibler. He was next recorded in South Africa where he designed a house in Johannesburg in June 1896. He very soon afterwards (August 1896) entered into partnership with John BEARDWOOD (cf. BEARDWOOD & IBLER). Beardwood's son recollected his father as saying that he had met Ibler on Park Station, Johannesburg. The partners' most important building of this date was the Synagogue (1897-1898) in Paul Kruger Street, known then as Market Street, in Pretoria. The Longland's Pretoria directory (1899) recorded the partnership as Ibler & Beardwood, possibly indicating that Ibler could have been the partner resident in Pretoria. The partnership dissolved in August 1899 at the approach of hostilities (the Anglo-Boer war broke out 11 October 1899). Both partners left Johannesburg for Natal, Ibler settling in Pietermaritzburg where he died in 1901 although both were listed in the 1903 Longland's directory for the Transvaal and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). There is also a record that he died outside Queensland.
