Barnett graduated at the University of the Witwatersrand in March 1935 with a Diploma in Architecture. When Barnett registered with the Institute of South African Architects in 1936 he was working in KEF GARDINER's office in Johannesburg. He entered into partnership with Gardiner in about 1937 and was working (cf GARDINER & BARNETT) in Krugersdorp from about 1937.

In 1959 his address was given as 216, Sanlam Buildings, Ockerse Street, Krugersdorp, Transvaal.
