Probably born in South Africa, studied architecture at night at the University of the Witwatersrand graduated with a Diploma in Architecture in August 1935. According to Chipkin (1993:261) Karp worked in the office of COOK & COWEN, for John Shaw and in 1935 was employed by I WAYBURNE. As a young man he was influenced as a young architect by DM COWIN and built a house in Scott Street, Waverley, Johannesburg next to Cowin's Casa Bedo. Once in practice on his own, with the assistance of 'a brilliant design man' GG ALLEN, Karp designed a number of Johannesburg buildings including the Greaterman's Building, corner Commissioner and End Streets.
