Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon ALDER, Cecil Born: 1878 Died: 1927 Architect Was born in Reading, Berkshire in England and was educated at Langton (Lancing?) College, Canterbury, Kent. Leaving school he was articled to Sir Alexander Stenning, FRIBA, and William Jennings, FSI, at Canterbury for four years. He later spent two years as an assistant with JF Duthoit, ARIBA, in Dover. In 1899 he enlisted with the 1st Contingent of Yeomanry, attached to the 77th Battery Field Artillery, in order to take part in the Anglo-Boer War. He remained in the country after the war and continued his work in architecture. He was employed in the office of STUCKE & BANNISTER in Johannesburg for six months before he joined the architectural branch of the Town Engineer's Department in Johannesburg in 1903. Here he appears to have made his career. Alder was closely involved with the Association of Transvaal Architects and became its first registrar in 1903. In 1913 Alder acted as assessor of the competition for a bioscope hall in Johannesburg. Nothing is currently known of his subsequent career. He died in the Transvaal.
